Text Message! God is Love and ……

Our God invented “text messages” long before cell phones came along.  When He spoke through His people and recorded it for all time, the idea was that we would read the text and get His message.  That’s why I started this little series some time ago, to highlight “text messages” that are often unread or marginalized in our day and age.  Today’s text message is found in Psalm 7, and involves the character of God, or what He is like:

Psalm 7:11-13 states “God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day.  If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow; he has prepared for him his deadly weapons, making his arrows fiery shafts”

It isn’t my intention to highlight the anger of our God and point to only that.  Instead, what I am hoping to get across today is a sense of balance.  We all know God is love (1 John 4:8) but God also hates (Proverbs 6:16).  We know He is a Father to His adopted sons/daughters (Romans 8:15), but He is also a judge who will never pardon the guilty (Proverbs 17:15).  And as today’s text message shows, while we know He forgives sin (1 John 1:9), He is also preparing for the destruction of those who do not turn from sin, but instead continue in it either in blatant rebellion or presumptuous arrogance as to the grace of God.

Let us not cling only to our favorite text messages and develop a skewed view as to the character of God.  All His characteristics are good!  Believers, as His adopted children, should be familiar and in full knowledge and acceptance of each and every one of them.
