Talkin’ about Fear!

Right now, we have a small construction project going on at the ChurchSalt world headquarters (my house).  Being construction ignorant, I have enlisted the help of a friend who has more talent and patience than myself.  My friend likes to have the radio on while working, so recently we spent a day listening to political talk shows while toiling in the Texas heat.  So why is this a worthy topic for a blog post on a Christ-focused blog?  Because listening to the programs, I realized that while I agreed with most of the viewpoints the hosts were presenting (I will not get sidetracked by discussing political issues or views here), there was something in the listening experience that felt wrong.  What was wrong was anxiety and fear.  The whole point of the shows, how they retain their popularity, is to work up anxiety in those listening.  This politician did this wicked thing, that one is spending public money to perform these horrible acts, the one over there is a liar, etc.  Anxiety, fear and anger are the reactions that the hosts are striving for.  It is what keeps the listener coming back for more.  While I agreed with most of their assessments, by the end of the day I came to the conclusion that I could not listen to them anymore.  Why?  They were intentionally trying to lead me into sin!  They were trying to bring about distrust in my sovereign Lord, or at least a very dim view of how He is currently using His almighty abilities.  If I listened to the hosts, I should be terrified, knowing that soon my family and I will be unable to obtain food due to unemployment, inflation and taxes.  But, this cowering fear isn’t to be the view of a Christian.  Not at all!  Look what Scripture has to say:

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?  And why are you anxious about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?  Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.   Matthew 6:25-34

Our Lord will provide!  Why should I be in fear and angst?  If the Lord of Heaven’s armies is taking care of me, do I really need to worry?  While I agree it is good to keep up on current issues, and it is good to be educated, I must also remind myself to steer clear of those who would try to lead me into fear and doubt.  Our Lord is sovereign.  Period.  End of discussion.  If I eat or starve, it will be at His hand, and no political party can prevent His will from being accomplished.  His arm will not be stopped from moving by an act of congress or a presidential veto.  He will provide for me or call me home, and I must be content in this.  The continual saturation of fear-based media is unhealthy for someone claiming to trust Christ with all of their being.  So the next day, the talk shows got turned off and the MP3 player was used to catch up on a backlog of Fighting for the Faith podcasts.  What a difference!  The good news of the Gospel and the hope of salvation instead of fear and worry.  I will sleep better tonight!!

    Romans 3. 9-15 “What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
    10 As it is written , There is none righteous, no, not one:
    11 There is none that understandeth , there is none that seeketh after God.
    12 They are all gone out of the way , they are together become unprofitable ; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
    13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit ; the poison of asps is under their lips:
    14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
    15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:

    Change man’s heart, change the world.

    2 Timothy 2.4 “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

    We are only supposed to concern ourselves with spreading the Gospel and making disciples out of the nations. Nowhere in Christ’s commission, does He tell us to run for gov’t, save the planet, fight poverty or hold rallies and protests over taxes. We are here for one reason only…God’s glory. The rest is dung and manure.
