Science Confirms Scripture – Yet Again

Some Christian folks are no doubt going to be making a big deal about a recent article posted over at Science 2.0, but in reality they really shouldn’t.  This newly published article was written to inform us that scientists studying the human mind have come to the conclusion that all humans are born believing there is a God, and have that belief hard-wired into the brain.  People may make a choice to abandon this belief, it remains there in a buried and deep place, almost like the tell-tale heart in Edgar Allen Poe’s classic novel.  They say it isn’t there, part of them believes it isn’t there, but deeply buried in the pit of denial it lingers on and they hear it calling to them from under the floor.  Those who follow Christ and openly believe shouldn’t be surprised by this whatsoever.  Scripture makes it clear in the first chapter of Romans that unbelief is a choice and that the true atheist doesn’t exist:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

It goes on to explain what the action of our Lord is in response to these folks and their foolish pursuit of what they call “wisdom”…

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Is this not what we see in our world today?  Scientists and universities churning out multitudes of people who embrace the foolishness of atheism and humanism with the result being the decline of any moral standard in society, a decline into the abyss of iniquity. People bury what they know and embrace foolishness instead so as to hang on to their sinful passions and worship of self while the group of them, society, slowly degenerates.

I find it interesting that the scientists are discovering what the theologians have known for centuries and what most street preachers have experienced in countless conversations, that being the non-existence of a true atheist.  I have no doubt that a few atheists will spring up on this blog or others in an attempt to defend the purity of their unbelief, but as for me I will continue to believe what Scripture says (and even a group of scientists in this case) – Atheists don’t exist even when they say they do.
