Andrew Murray wrote a great book on this subject entitled “Absolute Surrender”. It is on my top-10 list of favorite books. So many people look at submission to Christ as giving up something, when really it is gaining everything. I can’t help but wonder how much the American mindset of “Give me freedom or give me death” has an effect on people coming to Christ. I am sure it is often a significant factor.

You know, so many Christians “come to Christ” and “give their hearts to Christ”, but are they truly submitted? To be truly submitted is to be broken and remade into the image that He, our master wants. Only through pain, pressure and letting go of your lives, do we submit to God’s will. Being a Christian means ONLY total submission to God. Not 99%, not 99.9%, but 100% total submission. It’s like going to a chiropractor and fighting him the whole way, if you are there for him to help, then you have to relax and let him do what he wants.

I think you are exactly right. While this quote by Gurnall address the professing believer’s comfort with sin, it is also possible to live a religious life, striving for righteousness, and still never know Him. I love the passages in Ezekiel describing salvation where it is made so clear that He changes us, gives us a tender heart, fills us with His Spirit, and then, while walking with Him, we begin to obey. “His Spirit bears witness with our Spirit that we are the Sons of God”. For my two cents worth, this is made evident in one’s prayer life. Show me someone with no prayer life and I will show you someone that just doesn’t get it yet. People like to say it isn’t a religion, it’s a relationship. While I agree it is a relationship, and must be, it is also a religion because that is what happens naturally when we live it out, which also must be.
